What incentive do I have to purchase a NEW USB NON-NETWORKABLE printer. IF they would support their older printers. and would by another for the newer advanced features. but the networked HP Deskjet's 800 series are ready and capable.

When in the WORLD is HP going to release a network/serial driver for the old HP 870cse Deskjet series printers in OSX? I know the serial will need to be converted to USB (easy). GO EPSON! Wither on the VINE HP, *my rant is over* BULL! What you should say is that HP forgets its past customers and also creates customers for the competition. thus no need for us to support OUR OWN PRODUCTS either. I know I will not anymore buy any HP products that will not be support in the future. HP that your not supporting them because you think that will make the mass sheepish audience flock to the stores to buy NEW HP products. Blame Apple for not having a legacy serial port and overlook all the companies that have converters or even customers whom now use them on networks. Well, I guess HP is going to blame the non support for even writing the generic driver for older serial printers (that have been converted to network printers - notice no serial connection here HP!!) on APPLE and OSX. The hpijs drivers are very similar to GIMP-print, but I find that the hpijs drivers have a better presentation in the print dialog, and support the features of HP DesktJet printers more fully than GIMP-print. Spooling and transfer performance is also great. The hpijs drivers offer better support of printer features, and more consistent print output in regards to margins and other settings. I have returned to using the open-source CUPS hpijs drivers, available at There are also many lacking features, stability problems, and, when I tested the 2.2.1 drivers with my DeskJet 940c, I found the print spooling, queuing, and transfer to printer speeds to be unacceptably slow, with waits of 15-45 seconds between sending the print command and the printer actually printing single page plain text documents.

Even with these drivers, top and bottom margins are anywhere from 1/4 to 2/3 of an inch off. The 2.2.1 drivers still do not fix the issue with the top and bottom page margins on DesktJet printers.
